II John – an English Translation

This is my English translation of II John, shaped by close attention to the Greek and presented here without notes for uninterrupted reading. You can also read it side-by-side with the Greek

Note: This translation follows the principles outlined in the Johannine Epistles Translation Appendix. Translation decisions follow the Translation Micro–Style Guide.

  1. The Elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth— and not I alone, but all those having known the truth—
  2. because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever;
    grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
  3. I exceedingly rejoiced that I found some of your children walking in truth just as we received a commandment from the Father.
  4. And now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing a new commandment to you, but one we have had from the beginning, that we may love one another.
  5. And this is love, that we may walk according to his commandments.  This is the commandment, just as you heard from the beginning, that you may walk in it.
  6. For many deceivers have entered the world, those who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh.  This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
  7. Watch yourselves so that we may not lose out on that which we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.
  8. Whoever transgresses and remains not in the teaching of Christ does not have God; he who remains in the teaching of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
  9. If anyone comes to you and he does not bring this teaching, do not receive him in your house and do not even say ‘Greetings!’ to him;
  10. for the one who says “Greetings!” to him shares in his evil works.
  11. Though I have many things to write to you, I did not want to write with paper and ink, but I hope to come to you to speak face to face so that our joy may be full.
  12. The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.
