Koine Pronunciations – I John

One common obstacle to reading Greek is uncertainty about pronunciation. Even when reading silently, most of us naturally subvocalize—sounding out the words in our minds. To support that process, Accessible Faith uses a reconstructed Koine pronunciation system. You are, of course, welcome to use the pronunciation system you prefer.

If you would like to hear how this system sounds, the pronunciations below provide examples. The words included here are drawn from the epistle itself and were selected because they are significant to the text or present pronunciation features that readers often find challenging or interesting.

Pronunciations

ἀγγελία (message)
ἀληθείᾳ – fem. sing. dat. ▶ ἀλήθεια: to/for the truth.
γεγέννηται – 3rd sing. perf. pass. ind. ▶ γεννάω: to give birth, to bear, to be born.
ἐξεληλύθασιν – 3rd pl. perf. act. ind. ▶ ἐξέρχομαι: to go out.
ἐτύφλωσε – 3rd. sing. aor. act. ind. ▶ τυφλόω: to blind, to make blind.
ἐφανερώθη – 3rd sing. aor. pass. ind. ▶ φανερόω: to be revealed, to appear.
ἐψηλάφησαν – 3rd pl. aor. act. ind. ▶ ψηλαφάω: to touch, to handle.
ἱλασμός (propitiation)
καθαρίζει – 3rd sing. pres. act. ind. ▶ καθαρίζω: to cleanse.
κοινωνία (fellowship)

παράκλητον – masc. sing. acc. ▶ παράκλητος: helper, intercessor, advocate.

τελεία – adj. fem. sing. nom. ▶ τέλειος: perfect.
τετελειωμένη – perf. pass. ptc. fem. sing. nom. ▶ τελειόω: to complete, to perfect.
ὑπάγει – 3rd sing. pres. act. ind. ▶ ὑπάγω: to go away, to go.
φοβούμενος – pres. mid/pass. ptc. masc. sing. nom. ▶ φοβέω: to be afraid.
φυλάξατε – 2nd pl. aor. act. imp. ▶ φυλάσσω: to watch/ to guard.
χεῖρες – fem. pl. nom. ▶ χείρ: hand.
χρίσμα (anointing)
ψευδοπροφῆται – masc. pl. nom. ▶ ψευδοπροφήτης: false prophet. (Notice how the ευ is pronounced like “ev” here.)
ψεύστην – masc. sing. acc. ▶ ψεύστης: liar. (Notice how the ευ is pronounced like “ef” here.)
