The elder contrasts Gaius with Diotrephes who vain and prideful, on the one hand, and who was unwilling to receive the elder and the brethren, on the other. He also spoke malicious words against John and the brethren. Finally, he expelled the brethren from his church.
Diotrephes is also a problem because he is actively opposing the work of the Gospel.
Diotrephes is literally the opposite of everything that Gaius is!
